Frequently Asked Questions
YIKES!!! I have no (or little) art talent!
Perfect! Wonderful! A dream client!!!! All that art training you think you need will now NOT get in your way!!!! Imagine the freedom you have!
Think of it this way: Do you say to yourself, “Yikes! I have no psychoanlytical training or experience to go see those “other” therapists! Adler? Who’s Adler? Freud I know a bit about, but Jung? Not so much. Oh shucks, I guess that means therapy is not for me…”
The same goes for art therapy. You’re not expected to be a seasoned, highly trained artist—or someone who can even draw a stick figure. Just come prepared to experiment with matter, materials, media—your stuff. Come prepared to trust me; after all, I’m trained in this, right? Then look over the testimonials on the Home page and see how “good” or “average” the art is—then read how powerful the process was for each person.
Come curious. Leave the rest to the process.
How can I schedule an appointment with you, Marilyn?
You can email me at marilynhahn@metamorphOHsis.com. I will reply with a phone number or video conference link.
How can I pay?
At this point, I am accepting only e-transfer payments. Please send to marilynhahn@metamorphOHsis.com. i will reply with a receipt that you can submit to your benefits provider.
Please ensure your provider will cover these fees. Do not assume they will.
Appointments and payments must be made 12 hours prior to the session, unless otherwise discussed in an email, phone call, or video chat.
What if I have to cancel my appointment or drop out of a session?
Either contact me to let me know, or simply don’t show up (but that would be a bummer, eh?1). Again, 24 hours notice is needed to get a refund on any payments made.
What is art therapy exactly?
Art therapy primarily uses what you draw, sculpt, imagine, paint, cut, arrange — the sky’s the limit here! - to bring images, feelings, and subconscious beliefs into color, form, line, etc.
We carry around inner messages, beliefs, and prompts that, more often than not, do not yet have words. In the artmaking, we allow space, safety, time, and support to let those wordless messages pour out into image, take the shape of words, and become conversation.
There is talking when we get together, but too much talking more often than not keeps us in our heads — analytical, in the rut of how we’ve always talked about things, and predictable. But image and mark making? Well, the surprises there are sure to astound you! They bypass your logic and scripts, and they really get to, yes, you guessed it, the heART of the matter.
It’s kind of like reading tea leaves. Or recalling a vague dream. You know that it’s true when you see, feel, and hear it — and the healing in that process is magical!
Are you trained?
Absolutley! Not only do I have a degree in education from the University of Lethbridge and Masters level courses with the University of Calgary, but I have taken higher level courses in educational psychology, plenty of life and business coach training, as well as having graduated with the prestigous Canadian International Institute of Art Therapy, with the distinguished Lucille Proulx as my thesis advisor, and earning the designation Professional Art Therapist.
I will also be co-authoring a chapter with Lucille Proulx in an upcoming art therapy textbook published (2022) with the Routledge publishing house.
What supplies do I need? And will this get expensive?
We’ll work with what you have: your garden, closet, attic, kitchen pantry, your kid’s school supplies, your studio, those old markers and paints you forgot about, the art on your walls, photographs, etc. In our first 10 minutes of chatting, I will listen to what you are sharing, and from there I can intuit what “stuff” we need to cobble together to get the magic going.
But some basic art supplies would be so helpful: pens, pencils, markers, highlighters, scissors, glue, ruler, tons of different types of paper, magazines—and and a Bits and Bots Box (full of odds and ends of stickers, buttons, broken bit, etc.). Don’t sweat this though! It always works out!
Are you insured?
Again, absolutley! i am insured through the Canadian Art Therapy Association.
